What can poor inspection information cost?

The cost of poor information is not always visible on the original survey.

It often appears later.

A contractor may have to return to site because the first inspection did not capture enough detail.

A repair may be planned around an incomplete understanding of the defect.

A team may clean or excavate one area only to discover that the underlying problem is somewhere else.

Reporting may also become more difficult when the footage does not clearly support the conclusion being made.

Each individual consequence might look relatively small compared with the overall value of an infrastructure project.

Across repeated jobs and large networks, however, those inefficiencies add up.

Better evidence supports better planning

Good asset management depends on evidence.

For underground infrastructure, inspection provides one of the ways of building that evidence.

Knowing the actual condition of an asset can help teams distinguish between work that needs immediate attention and work that can be monitored, cleaned, repaired or planned for later.

It can also help avoid treating every visible problem in the same way.

A structural defect, a service connection problem and a build-up of material may all appear during a drainage inspection, but they can lead to very different interventions.

The better the information available, the easier it becomes to match the response to the condition found.

Larger pipelines, longer distances or applications requiring powered movement and greater camera control may be better suited to a crawler system.

The point is not that one inspection method is universally better than the other.

The equipment needs to match the access, pipe diameter, inspection distance and level of detail required.

If the inspection system cannot adequately reach or assess the area in question, the quality of the final decision is already being compromised.

Inspection before intervention

One of the most useful roles for CCTV inspection is helping establish what kind of intervention is actually required.

Depending on the condition found, the next step might involve cleaning, jetting, repair, rehabilitation, excavation, monitoring or further investigation.

That decision has a cost whichever option is chosen.

Inspection does not remove the need for engineering judgement, but it gives the people making that judgement more information to work with.

The alternative is making assumptions about an asset that cannot be seen directly.

Inspection after the work matters too

Inspection can also provide value after an intervention has taken place.

Where cleaning, repair or rehabilitation work has been completed, a further inspection can help confirm the result and provide evidence of the condition of the asset afterwards.

That creates a clearer record of what was found, what work was carried out and what the network looked like once that work was completed.

For contractors and asset owners, that evidence can be just as important as the original diagnosis.
