Manhole Guardian – Adjustable Manhole Opening Guard (370–900 mm)

Manhole Guardian™ is a portable, adjustable safety frame designed and manufactured in the UK by Sweetnam & Bradley. It helps reduce exposure to open manholes during drainage, sewer, utility and maintenance work while allowing operatives continued working access to the opening.

Independent static-load testing

A Certex UK report dated 16 November 2023 (reference PC99) records a Manhole Guardian sample subjected to static loads of 240 kg and 440 kg, each held for five minutes, without observed deformation. This describes the recorded test conditions; it is not a general safe working load rating or confirmation that the product is appropriate for every site.

The manufacturer also reports using finite element analysis (FEA) as part of the product design process.

How to fit the Manhole Guardian

1. Loosen the four locating-post wheel bolts and slide the posts towards the centre.
2. Loosen the central wheel bolt. Rotate the upper member into a cross, locate the cut-out securely and retighten the centre bolt.
3. Set the frame over the open manhole, ensuring it rests securely on the surrounding ground.
4. Slide each locating post against the inside of the manhole frame and tighten the four wheel bolts.

Safety information

The manufacturer states that Manhole Guardian is not personal protective equipment (PPE). Use it only as part of a suitable site risk assessment and safe system of work; it does not replace required guarding, traffic management, supervision or other controls. Do not leave an exposed opening unattended in a public-facing area.

Will it fit a round manhole?

Yes. The adjustable locating posts are designed for round, square and rectangular openings within the stated 370–900 mm range.

Can work continue through the manhole?

Yes. The cross-frame design maintains access through the opening while the Manhole Guardian is positioned in place.

Does the 440 kg test mean it is a 440 kg load-rated cover?

No. Certex recorded a static-load test on a sample under specified conditions. Use the full test report and your site-specific risk assessment; do not treat the test result as a universal load rating.
